HEALTHCARE IN SPAIN, INSURANCE, SOCIAL SECURITY IN SPAIN
It is convenient to be with a Health Insurance company when in Spain should you need one. If you are an European citizen you can apply for a European Health Insurance Card, which entitles you to health cover when in Spain and the EU. You can generally apply from your post office or your National Health Institution in your home country. If you are from the United Kingdom you can apply from here . If you you plan to remain in Spain for longer periods you can apply for Social Security number which will entitle you to health cover in Spain.
Spanish Hospitals are well staffed and short waiting lists.
NIE NUMBER - SOCIAL SECURITY
If you want to reside long term in Spain it is convenient applying for a NIE number(ID) from your nearest police station in Spain. You´ll need a NIE number for most daily issues such as renting a place out, buying a house, opening a bank account, social, social security, registering with your local council(Town Hall) etc.
Once you are settled in Spain you can apply for a spanish Social Security NI /Number from your nearest office, here.
