Tenerife is the largest and most populated Island of the Canarian archipelago. It´s 300km off the coast of Africa.
Next to La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro forms the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the largest island of the Canary Islands and the most populated island of Spain before Palma de Mallorca in the Balearic Islands. The island lies in the center of the archipelago.
The second most populated city and third in the Canary islands is San Cristobal de La Laguna, also World Heritage Site.
The island has another place on the UNESCO as World Heritage Site which is the Teide National Park, the highest peak of Spain and all of the Atlantic islands and the third largest volcano in the world from its base, the Teide mountain.
There has been 5 volcanic eruptions in Tenerife. The first was in 1492 in Boca Cangrejo Volcano and was seen by Christopher Columbus. The next occurred in 1704, when synchronously erupted the volcanoes of Arafo, Fasnia and Seven Springs(Siete Fuentes).
Two years later, in 1706, was the biggest eruption with a greater magnitude, the Trevejo volcan. This threw large amounts of lava that buried the city and port of Garachico, at that time the most important city of the island. The last volcanic episode of the eighteenth century occurred in 1798 in the Cañadas de Teide, specifically in Chahorra. Finally, in 1909 volcanic activity started at the Chinyero Volcan, in the municipality of Santiago del Teide. Subsequently to that date and until now there have been no further eruptions on the island. Moreover, despite the volcanic nature of Tenerife, the five eruptive episodes that happened on the island never caused any fatality.
The beautiful beaches of Tenerife differe from one another. Here we visit probably the best beaches in Spain and Europe. You can find from sandy coastlines and golden sands as well as bays with black dark sand due to the volcanic formation they have.
