Mérida Merida is the capital of Extremadura and seat of its institutions. Merida is geographically close to the center of the region, crossed by the Guadiana and Albarregas rivers. In Mérida there is a large number of monuments and structures of great importance to keep alive history that happened in the city many centuries ago. The cities of Mérida in Venezuela, capital of Mérida State, and Mérida in Yucatán, Mexico, were named after Mérida in Spain. A square in Mérida called the Glorieta de las Méridas del Mundo (Square of the Méridas of the World) contains an obelisk commemorating the three sister cities. Santa Eulalia Basilica: Originally a Visigothic structure,it was an ancient Roman temple, where a martyr girl(Eulalia) was supposedly burned alive in 304 AD for spitting the face of a Roman magistrate. In 1990, excavations around the tomb of the famous martyr revealed several layers of Paleolithic , Visigoths, Vizantine and Romans settlements.

Mérida Roman Theatre: The Roman Theater of Merida is a construction promoted by consul Marco Vipsanio Agripa, in the Roman town of Augusta Emerita, current Mérida(Spain). According to date the theater construction occurred in the years 15 to 16 a. C. Besides being the most visited monument in the city since 1933 it houses the development of the Festival de Teatro Clásico de Mérida(Mérida Classical Theatre Festival) thus returns to its original function and goes beyond a mere ornament.

Mérida Amphitheater: The Amphitheater in Merida was built by retired roman army soldiers. The amphitheater is part of the archaeological site next to the Merida Roman Circus, one of the largest and most extensive archaeological sites in Spain. It was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1993.
