Mérida is the capital of Extremadura and seat of its institutions. Merida is geographically close to the center of the region, crossed by the Guadiana and Albarregas rivers. Mérida Roman Theatre: The Roman Theater of Merida is a construction promoted by consul Marco Vipsanio Agripa, in the Roman town of Augusta Emerita, current Mérida(Spain). According to date the theater construction occurred in the years 15 to 16 a. C. Besides being the most visited monument in the city since 1933 it houses the development of the Festival de Teatro Clásico de Mérida(Mérida Classical Theatre Festival) thus returns to its original function and goes beyond a mere ornament.
Mérida Amphitheater: The Amphitheater in Merida was built by retired roman army soldiers. The amphitheater is part of the archaeological site next to the Merida Roman Circus, one of the largest and most extensive archaeological sites in Spain. It was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1993.
Circus Maximus (Mérida): The Circus Maximus(Spanish: Circo romano) is a
Roman hippodrome in Mérida, Spain. Used for chariot racing, it was modelled on the Circus Maximus in Rome and other circus buildings throughout the empire. Measuring more than 400 m in length and 30 m of width, it is one of the best preserved examples of the Roman circus. The circus could house up to 30,000 spectators. It seems to have been built sometime around 20 BC, being inaugurated 30 years later. It was located far outside the city walls, but close to the road that connected the city to Toledo and Córdoba.
