Oviedo is the commercial and administrative capital of Asturias. Here we find a wealth of heritage found, squares, palaces and churches, its cathedral is the oldest civil building in the city, which survived a fire that ravaged Oviedo in 1522. The main shopping area of Oviedo is in Uria Street,well worth a visit, we find headquarters of banks, insurance companies and department stores. Oviedo is located in the central area of Asturias, between the rivers Nalón and Nora rivers. Oviedo bordered to the North with the municipalities of Las Regueras Llanera and the south by the municipalities of Mieres and Ribera de Arriba, on the east by the municipalities of Siero and Langreo and West by the municipalities of Grade and Santo Adriano. The climate is typical of the northern part of Spain, cold and rainy during winter and hot in summer.

 

Significantly, the city of Oviedo has been a source of inspiration for the city of Vetusta in the novel The judge's wife of Leopoldo Alas Clarin. Oviedo was also inspiring city Ramon Perez de Ayala called Pilars in his narrative.

The University of Oviedo, founded in the late sixteenth century by the Catholic Archbishop Fernando de Valdés Salas, Inquisitor of Spain, began it´s activities in 1608, having campuses in Gijón and Mieres. Oviedo was also, along with Barcelona and Aviles, scenery of the latest film from U.S. director Woody Allen, Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Fine Arts Museum of Asturias: It´s home of the largest art collection of from

Asturias. It is located in three buildings in the old town of Oviedo: the Palacio de Velarde(Velarde´s Palace), from the eighteenth century, to which is attached a construction from the twentieth century and the House of Oviedo-Portal, from the seventeenth century. The museum has more than 8,000 items and it´s one of the best public art collections in Spain, with works ranging from the Middle Ages uo to today.
Teatro Campoamor(Campoamor Theatre): This important stage is the annual site of the Templeton Prize in Spain and other important festivals and events. The Campoamor Theater season has attracted thousands of visitors since its first edition in 1948.  Web

Oviedo Cathedral: This mainly Gothic cathedral is also known by "sancta ovetensis", referring to the quality and quantity of relics and religious items it contains.

El Fontan: The Fontan it´s a group of buildings that form a rectangular arcaded square. Dating from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, it was built over a pond, so it was rebuilt in the late twentieth century. Fontan houses a Market which is held on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sunday mornings.

Casa de Llanes: It has one of the best baroque fronts of Asturias, it was built in 1740.

Airport: The closest airport to Oviedo it´s 40 away and 13 from Gijón, in the district of Avilés. There are buses on the outside that will take us to the major cities of Asturias.

Bus Station of Oviedo: In Pepe Cosmen St, with daily conexions to the main spanish capitals and provinces.

Buses: There is an extensive network of buses covering the city of Oviedo.

Railway -Trains Oviedo: There is two train stations in Oviedo, North Station, or Oviedo´s Main Station and Corredoría, in the district of Corredoria. From the North Station we can get to the near by towns in Asturias, and from Corredoróa to the main capitals in Spain.

The area to have a few good Asturian Ciders is in Calle Gascona(Gascona Street). Along the same street there is some good spanish restaurants for a meal drink or tapa. By the Old Town of Oviedo, along it´s narrow streets we can enjoy a drink in some of the old pubs and bars.  open until late. The streets to visit are Calle Mon, Calle Oscura(spanish for Dark Street), San Isidoro, la Corrada del Obispo, y la Plaza del Paraguas(Umbrella Sq) among others.
