ZARAGOZACapital of Aragon, it´s the fifth most populated city after Seville in Spain. The weather, typical from the Ebro basin, makes summers hot and winters with low temperatures and frost. Zaragoza hosted the Expo 2008 in the summer of 2008, a World's Fair about water and sustainable development. It will host another fair in 2014, the upcoming "Flowers Expo" The city has an impressive legacy of monuments and history, one of the most importants in Spain. It lays in the middle of the Ebro Valley, in the middle of the Ebro river, at the point where the rivers Huerva and Gallego meet. The province of Zaragoza is rich and diverse, from high mountains to deep valleys full of contrasts.
Palacio de la Maestranza: The name of this palace comes since it was used in 1912 by the Royal Cavalry of Zaragoza, although the age of the building is much older, as it was build in the Renaissance period. It was recognized as a National Monument in 1931.
Zaragoza´s Main Theatre: Built by the spanish architect Agustín Sanz and opened in 1799, has become a privileged place that gathers the most important companies in ballet, opera, comedy..
Basilica of Our Lady of the Pilar: It is the largest baroque church in Spain, it preserves works of art by Goya and Bayeu among others.
Salvador´s Cathedral(La Seo): Recently restored, and a mixture of styles-Romanesque, Gothic, Mudejar and Baroque-it´s built on the ruins of a former mosque of the Muslim era in Spain. The interior is a museum of arts and history: the Gothic altarpiece, organ, choir, the set of Renaissance and Baroque chapels or the impressive Museum of Tapestries are some examples. La Seo was declared World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. The cathedral is located on the Plaza de la Seo(La Seo Square).
Aljafería Palace: Arab Construction, it was the Palace of King Al-Qadir of the Taifa of Saraqusta in the eleventh century. It was also used by the kings of Aragon such as the Ceremonious Pedro IV, among others. It was later used as headquarters of the Spanish Inquisition and today is the Parliament of Aragon. The court yard, surrounded by horseshoe arches entwined with plaster, the mihrab, and the upper floor of Renaissance style, with the grand staircase and throne room are some of it´s important landmarks.
Zaragoza
The city has a university since 1542, although its origins are in the twelfth century. Currently split between several campuses, two are in the city. Its lecture-rooms have taught internationally recognised professors like the Nobel Prize winner Santiago Ramón y Cajal amongst others. Its activity is spread along the three provinces of Aragon, with teaching campuses and research centres in Huesca, Teruel and Zaragoza.
There are several theaters in Zaragoza, the oldest is the Main Zaragoza´s Theater, but also has the Market Theater(Teatro del Mercado), the Station´s Theater(Teatro de la Estación)and Arbolé Theatre, dedicated exclusively to children's programs. It has an auditorium with excellent acoustics that captures much of the musical activity of the capital. In this Hall is based the Enigma-seat Chamber Orchestra Auditorium of Zaragoza. Zaragoza has a rich literary tradition. It was one of the first Spanish cities in having a printing house and have always had a colorful literary life.
The Old Querter it´s the heart of the town´s leisure.
Squares like Santa Marta, San Pedro or la Sas or are covered with terraces. The tapas bar opens up in El Tubo(The Tube), a set of narrow alleys located in the Old Town leading to Spain´s Square(Plaza de España) and home to the largest agglomeration of tapas bars in town. Within the Old Town the cabaret La Plata has 3 daily sessions, and also in the vanguard with the most cutting edge clubbing sessions.
Also within the Historic Area is the largest agglomeration of discobars and pubs in the city of Zaragoza, popular among young people during the weekends, when we can have some late nights. The area of San Miguel has become another focus of tapas and restaurants with numerous terraces and bars. By the University there is also good restaurants and tapas bars.
Zaragoza Auditorium: The Auditorium is part of a structure formed by
the same Auditorium - Congress Palace and the Multipurpose Room, designed to host fairs, exhibitions, concerts, etc.. The sound quality of the halls of the Auditorium has been praised by directors like Zubin Mehta.
