This province borders on Asturias and Galicia. It is a crossing point between major regions of the Iberian peninsula, through the province of León run two major routes: from South to North, Via de la Plata, and from east to west the famous Camino de Santiago to Galicia. The capital of the province, the city of León, is located on a river terrace at the confluence of the rivers Bernesga and Torio, Bernesga runs the city to the west, and Torio, defines the east, reaching most of the city center between both rivers. On their way through the city are suitable for walkers, with gardens and pedestrian walkways. The confluence of both is at the heights of the circle of La Lastra, where Torío river empties it´s waters into the Bernesga.

Towns of León|What to visit|Landmarks in Spain

Astorga: This town of Leon is located in the central area of the province in the

Molenaseca, León

region of Maragatería. The city of Astorga is head of one of the oldest and largest diocese in Spain. Astorga is a flat land and mainly used for cultivation. The Jerga River, which crosses the city from the south, runs between the city and the River Tuerto. Also, we´ll find numerous streams and creeks in the surrounding areas of Astorga decorating their corners and making it a very peaceful place to be.

*Astorga Cathedral: It started to be built in 1471 and is predominantly a late Gothic style. Astorga cathedral has numerous altarpieces, including the Hispano-Flemish altarpiece of San Miguel and the altarpiece of Gaspar Becerra (1558), a Renaissance mannerist masterpiece. Beside the Cathedral is also the Episcopal Palace of Astorga, the work of modernist architect Antoni Gaudí.

*Astorga City Council: The city council is a baroque building from the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century, it was built by the leading architect of De la Lastra. A striking pair of Maragatos, popularly known as "Joe Zancuda" and "Colasa" hit hard the bells to give the hours.

*Roman Route of Astorga -Astúrica: This is a guided tour of the archaeological treasures of Astorga (Asturica Augusta). Its price is of about € 3, and you can obtain the tickets at the Tourist Office in Plaza Eduardo de Castro. The tour begins in what is known as the "Roman gate", at the bottom of the cathedral, and it is the remains of a Roman gate wall found in subsequent excavations, we´ll visit the "Foso Campamental", and the Minor Thermal Waters.

Ponferrada:

*Ponferrada Castle: The Templar Castle in Ponferrada, originally was a Celtic hill fort, in a similar position to that of others in El Bierzo region. Subsequently, a site believed to have been Roman and Visigoth township. By 1178 Ferdinand II of León allows the Templars established a parcel in the current Ponferrada. In 1180 the King issued immunity to repopulate the town, which had emerged a century earlier, documenting the first fortification in 1187.

*Basílica de La Encina: The Basilica of the Encina is a Renaissance Christian Church, located in the town of Ponferrada, in the region of El Bierzo, the plant is a Latin cross, the header at the top forms half a hexagon.

Spanish town and village located southeast of the province of Leon, it has an important historical and cultural heritage, and various celebrations taking place throughout the year, most important is Easter, and the town becomes a receiver of national and international tourism. Pendones de León: The Pendones of Leon is one of the most deeply rooted traditions of the province , they were famous in the Middle Ages, and today, far from medieval battles, they are shown in bank holiday days. It's called a Pendon the banner used as distinction since the Middle Ages. They were used by knights on their spears to indicate its presence between the tenth and thirteenth centuries. City of León

The city of León is the capital of the province of León, in the autonomous community of Castile and León in northwest Spain. It has a population of about 138000 makes it the largest municipality in the province, accounting for more than one quarter of the province's population. León is famous for its Gothic Cathedral and many other monumental buildings, such as the Real Colegiata de San Isidoro, which one of the world's best collections of Romanesque paintings; Casa de Botines which was an early work of Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí, nowadays occupied by a bank.

Leonese processions and traditions are declared to be of international interest and, on those days, many people from all over the world visit León to see and participate in its traditions such as easter. Temperatures in Leon a fairly even through out the year, summers are softened by the proximity to the Cantabrian Mountains, and cold winters with an average temperatures of 0°C - 4°C.

Valporquero Caves: One of the most beautiful and important caves in Spain, with large rooms populated with stalactites and stalagmites and interior waterways.

 

Trashumancia Trails: The route starts in Villayuste, where a road between farms and fields leads to the Eras of Redimil.

Camino de Santiago of León: This is an important pilgrimage road, one of the most important in the Santiago Route, 200 kilometers in 9 stages in which we can admire the heritage of Leon.

 

Brañas de Caldas Route: From the spa of Caldas de Luna, the route is close to the motorway from León to Asturias. Near the tunnel Negron, begins a steep ascent to the Brañas de Laven, first by a highway and then along a path, The Sendina. Then a new track trail leads to Divisa, highest point on the route, with a wonderful view over the boundary between Luna and Arbas. The path descends to the ruins of the Huts of Pandiello.

Emperor Theater: Designed in 1949 by the Madrid architect Manuel de Cardenas in collaboration with Gonzalo de Cárdenas and Francisco J. Sanz.
