Asturias. The Beauty of the north

Northern Spain. Hotel Bookings. Tourism

This northern province of Spain is a mountainous coastal community, bordered to the the west by Galicia, Cantabria to the east, and south by Castile and Leon. Its main towns are Gijón and Oviedo.

Among his industry is still significant coal mining, but does not have the dominant role it had in former times.

The Principality of Asturias(Principado de Asturias)is an autonomous community within the kingdom of Spain, former Kingdom of Asturias. It is located on the Spanish north coast facing the Cantabrian Sea, or Bay of Biscay. The most important cities are the provincial capital, Oviedo, the seaport and largest city Gijón. We can fly directly to Asturias from Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, or London, which can be fairly reasonable when we buy the ticket in advance. Asturias airport is located near the town of Avilés, and we can easily get there by bus from the three main towns of Gijón, Oviedo and Avilés.

Asturias has a rich historical legacy, with it´s own (Asturian Art), with monuments such as Santa Maria del Naranco, Santa Cristina de Lena and San Miguel de Lillo of romanesque style, all of them in Oviedo.

Victoria´s Cross

Asturias

In the municipality of Villaviciosa are the church of San Salvador de Valdediós and the Church of San Salvador de Priesca. In the asturian municipality of Cabranes we have to mention San Julián de Viñon. Romanesque art is very present all over Asturias as it is crossed by the Jacobean Routes to Santiago, in Galicia. Good examples of Romanesque art is the monastery of San Pedro de Villanueva near Cangas de Onis, the churches of San Esteban de Aramil in Siero, San Juan de Amandi (Villaviciosa) and Santa Maria de Junco in Ribadesella. The Gothic style is not abundant, but there are some good examples of this style as the cathedral of San Salvador in Oviedo.
