Cantabria is a mountainous region and with a coastal character with a significant natural heritage. 40% of Cantabria´s surface is above 700 meters above sea level and one third of that with slopes over a 30% slope.

Cantabria is divided into three areas:

 

 

La Marina: This is a low coastal valley area, large and of mild forms of about 10 km wide where the altitude does not normally exceed 500m, it borderes the sea by a shallow coastal line, forming steep cliffs which are are broken by the appearance of mouths of rivers leading to estuaries and beaches. On the coast of the La Marina we will find the the Bay of Santander. In the south La Marina limits with the Cantabrian mountains.

 

La Montaña(The Mountain): It is a long barrier of rugged mountains parallel to the sea that make up part of the Cantabrian mountains,

the valleys configure different natural regions of Cantabria, Liébana, Nansa, Saja, Besaya, Pas-Pisueña, Miera, Asón-Gándara, Campoo.

 

Campoo and the Southern Valleys: Another region of Cantabria is Campoo, in the extreme south of Cantabria.

Santoña: The town is surrounded almost entirely by the Cantabrian Sea, bounded on the north Berria beach, south to the beach of San Martin, on the east by Mount Buciero and west by the municipalities of Argoños Escalante and Bárcena de Cicero. In this direction lies the fishing port and the new section of the marina and the Marshes of Santoña, which along with Victoria and Joyel are the Marshes Nature Reserve of Santoña, Victoria and Joyel.
