Located northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, Catalonia covers an area of about 32,000 km ², bordered to the north by France (Midi-Pyrenees and Languedoc-Roussillon) and Andorra, on the east by the Mediterranean Sea along the coastal strip of about 580 miles to the south by the Comunidad Valenciana (Castellón), and West with Aragon (Zaragoza, Teruel and Huesca).

The mountainous areas near the Pyrenees have a high mountain climate, with minimum temperatures below zero and heavy snows in winter. Like some other parts in the rest of the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula, Catalonia was colonised by Ancient Greeks, who settled around the Roses area. Both Greeks and Carthaginians (who, in the course of the Second Punic War, briefly ruled the territory) interacted with the main Iberian substratum. After the Carthaginian defeat, it became, along with the rest of Hispania, a part of the Roman Empire, Tarraco , today´s Tarragona was one of the main Roman posts in the Iberian Peninsula. The remains of this ancient cultures can still be seen through out the province. Catalunya has 4 provinces: Barcelona, Lleida, Girona, and Tarragona.
The Catalan coast has over 500 km in length, and it´s known also as the Costa Brava, although the definition reaches 754.8 km. The coast tends to be straight without major geographical accidents. The only maritime geographical accidents configures the Pyrenees contact with the sea, forming Cape Creus, near which lies the Gulf of Rosas. Subsequently and until the Costa Brava Blanes is characterized by high cliffs and small secluded "calas"(small beaches). Then follows a long line of beaches of the Maresme, parallel to the coastal mountain range, and only cut by several commercial and fishing ports. Barcelona's coastline is characterized by artificial beaches and a large commercial port that extends along nine kms. The southern part of the port was developed on the plain of the Delta del Llobregat, that after the port coast draws a soft line just over 18km.
