Euskadi / Basque Country

Euskadi, or the Basque Country is a region located in the Cantabrian coast, bordering France to the north, and the spanish communities of La Rioja, Castille, Cantabria and Navarra. The Basque people, which includes the Spanish region of Navarre and the French regions of Basse Navarre (Nafarroa Beherea-Baja Navarra), Labourdt (Lapurdi) and Soule (Soule) is of an origin where there are several theories, but none conclusive, the language, Euskara, is unconnected with the rest of the European languages, and possibly is one of the oldest. Economically the Basque Country is an industrial region, covering 9% of exports from Spain and exceeding the European average. Its capital is Vitoria. Alava houses the parliament and the headquarters of the Basque Government and the largest city, Bilbao.

The topography of the Basque Country is mainly mountainous, consists of the Basque Mountains and the imposing Sierra de Cantabria Mountain Range in the south, with the Toloño Peak as the maximum altitude, reaching the foothills of the Pyrenees of Navarre. The highest point in Euskadi is Mount Aitxuri, with an altitude of 1,551 meters. Mount Aitxurri is located in the Aizcorri Natural Park.

LOCAL-TRADITIONAL SPORTS IN THE BASQUE COUNTRY

There is some different local sports being played in the Basque Country. The most famous is the Basque Ball"Pelota Vasca" which is about throwing a ball using your hands with a glove in a pediment consisting of two walls (front and left side), which can be played in a single mode (one against one) or Couple (two against two).
