La Rioja - Spain

La Rioja is a community north of the Iberian Peninsula, it borders the Basque Country, Navarra, Aragon and Castilla Leon. In its history was occupied by three tribes, Berons, the Palendones, and Vascones. The region was also invaded by the Muslims in the early eighth century. Known for its wines, is also notable for being an area with important archaeological sites. La Rioja excels in the number and conservation of important archeological sites, making it according to experts, one of the most important paleontological areas of the world, where we see large numbers of dinosaur tracks, many of these, you can see them in the Municipality of Inciso, other Rioja economically include not only the production of its outstanding wines, but also by the textile industry, footwear and furniture.

La Rioja is full of history too, a way of seeing it is through its monasteries, since many centuries still remain centers of spirituality, prayer and culture, far from cities and everydays life. Some of these places have been declared World Heritage Sites.

San Millán de Yuso: This monastery was ordered to be built in the year 1053 by King García Sánchez III of Navarre. Situated in the town of San Millan de la Cogolla, province of La Rioja (Spain), on the left bank of Cardenas river, in the valley of San Millán. It is part of the monumental complex of two monasteries, along with an older Monastery of San Millan de Suso.

La Rioja province offers visitors an open region to rural tourism and gastronomy.

There is three important regions of La Rioja(Spain)

HIGH RIOJA: In this upper part of the province of LA Rioja in Spain we find the valleys of Haro, Nejera, and Santo Domingo de la Calzada.

This is the westernmost region of La Rioja, bordered to the north with the right bank of the Ebro River, to the east by the Moncalvillo Mountain Range and Camero Nuevo Mountains, on the south by the Castejon Mountains and the Urbión Peaks. There is a prevailing scenary of crops and wineyards.

 

MID RIOJA: This is the central region of the autonomous community of La Rioja. It´s most important counties are Logroño and Cameros.

 

LOWER RIOJA: Located east of the community, covers the counties of Alfaro, Arnedo, Calahorra and Cervera.

Camino de Santiago de La Rioja | Routes

Santiago´s Way of La Rioja

El Camino de Santiago(Santiago´s Way)passes through this region through Logroño and Nájera to get to Santo Domingo de la Calzada where they converge with the other route known as the Interior or the French Basque, coming from France to the town of Irun, runs through Andoain, Beasain, Zalduendo de Alava, Vitoria, La Puebla de Arganzón, entering in La Rioja by Conchas de Haro to Briñas, Haro, Zarratón, Cidamón, San Torcuato, Bañares and finally Santo Domingo de la Calzada (probably the closest to the Santiago´s way in the region) from where we continue to Belorado towards to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia finishing its journey in the town of Grañón.

 

Cuisine of La Rioja | Gastronomy

The most popular dishes in La Rioja are the "Rioja potatoes", which consists of cooked potatoes with sausage and lamb chops branch plate usually made in wineries and outdoor grilling on a grill using the branches of the vines. A famous gastronomic excursion through the capital in Logroño is Laurel Street, where you can taste a variety of "tapas" and snacks in a relaxed, conversational environment, always accompanied with wine from Rioja.

 

 

Fiestas | Traditions | Festivals in La Rioja

Briones Medieval Days: Held in the town of Briones in La Rioja in June, the city is dressed in medieval times of the sixteenth century to display the various trades and activities already in decline or disappeared during the days Briones was set with banners, medieval badgers, vintage clothing, performances, dances and medieval shows. Among the medieval trades represented we can see potters, carpenters, masons, plaster craftsmen, smiths, coin minting, a silversmith, escribanos(medieval clerks).

 

Wine Battle: Held in the town of Haro in La Rioja takes place in the area of Riscos de Bilibio, about 6 km from Haro and the throwing of red wine is among the contenders until they are completely purple. We will attend the celebration with white clothes and a red scarfs.

Transports | How to get to La Rioja

Logroño (La Rioja) is located 328km from Madrid and 468km from Barcelona.

 

Airport: From the airport, we can travel to Logroño and the nearby localities. The airport is located east of Logroño (La Rioja), in the town of Agoncillo, 10 minutes drive from the center of Logroño, through the LO-20 and subsequently the N-232.
